After UA game, decision looms for 4-Star WR Tommy Bush

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Four-star wide receiver Tommy Bush didn’t end his experience at the Under Armour All-American Game with a catch last Thursday, but that will hold little consequence to the programs still looking to snag his commitment ahead of National Signing Day in February.

In Bush’s defense, the duo of Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Emory Jones only combined to complete eight passes in the game, so he wasn’t the only player left hanging in that regard. Still, he took it in stride and felt that he showed during practices that he’s able to compete against elite competition.

“It’s highly competitive here with the best in the nation,” he said. “I had a lot of fun, I feel like I developed just by competing with these guys.”

Bush was initially on the dockett to announce his commitment during the game, but after talking things over with his family, he decided it was best to wait until making it back home to do so.

“We just canceled it because we needed a little more time,” he said. “We’re still going to make our decision a couple weeks before Signing Day.”

That decision could also come in part due to a recent offer from Florida, whom Bush said he’d like to take an official visit to this month. Prior to his arrival at the Under Armour game, he had just taken an official visit to Georgia, who went on to play for a national championship. It’s far from a two-horse race between the Bulldogs and Gators, who also are contending with Baylor, Michigan State and Ole Miss for his commitment.

IN HIS WORDS

On Baylor - Bears signee Byron Hanspard spoke about recruiting Bush during the week

“They weren’t pressuring me at all, actually,” he said of the staff. “That’s the one school that said ‘you always have a spot with us, no matter what.’ I’ve been hearing it a lot - especially from the guys committed to Michigan State, Georgia, Florida, and I’ve talked to [Hanspard] about Baylor a little bit and he’s just saying nothing but good things about them.”

On Florida, where Bush spent some of his childhood

“When I did live there, I liked them and Florida State a lot,” he said. “For Florida, for them to come after me, that meant a lot now that the Mississippi State staff is out there. I knew Coach (Brian) Johnson from Houston, so that’s been a good thing as well.”

On Georgia’s latest message to him

“They’re a successful program and have been recruiting me for quite a while now,” he said. “They haven’t pressured me, even with the spots in their class filling up fast, so that’s put me at ease when it comes to them. They’ve been talking about making it to the National Championship - I’ve gotten that often - there’s some funny guys out there.”

RIVALS REACTION

Reading the tea leaves, it seems as though Georgia was very likely one of the favorites to land his commitment, should he gone through with it at the game. With his talk of wanting to take an official to Gainesville before making his decision, it could be argued that the decision comes down to those schools with Baylor Being the in-state option. Bush hasn’t said he’d prefer to stay in Texas after growing up on the move due to his family’s military commitments, but the Bears could potentially offer a more convincing pitch to feature him earlier in their offense.
