By now, it’s no secret that four-star San Antonio, Texas, wide receiver Tommy Bush is one of the country’s most highly-recruited prospects.

Bush has spent the better part of the last few months picking up offers in bunches and though he hasn’t yet come to the point of narrowing down his options, he’s started the process of taking a harder look at programs and campuses. After attending Baylor’s junior day on February 18, he was a guest at Texas’s junior day last weekend and the plan for the summer is to hit the road hard and have a look at some of the other programs he’s most interested in.

“It’s been crazy,” he said. “I was getting offers before the Houston Opening (Nike regional camp) but I just put up good numbers, ran good routes and all that, and it just blew up after that. Now it’s interviews, coaches hitting me up all the time, but my parents are keeping me well-grounded through this process.”

While the offers have come from a variety of programs, it’s clear that the major thing thing he’s seeking in a potential program is a sense of camaraderie. He said that was one of the things that he thought he found while on campus in Austin.

“Seeing how family-oriented it is stood out to me the most,” he said. “You would have expected more football talk, but they’re really there for you.”

IN HIS WORDS

...More on Texas

“The main thing was I had been just talking to Coach Drew (Mehringer) over the phone for a while but to see him in person and what kind of coach he is - he’s straight and to the point,” he said. “You could tell that he cares about the player and not just what they’re doing on the field. Seeing him in person made the trip well worth it and seeing Coach (Tom) Herman, at UT - he’s got big things coming up.”

On Baylor

“The coaches there are really family-oriented,” he said. “I had a chance to talk to Coach (Matt) Rhule and Coach (Director of Player Personnel, Evan) Cooper. They were just on me every second telling me about the program. I met every coach there and I think that it’s a fantastic atmosphere for my family and me.”

On Michigan State

“I’ve always been talking to Michigan State, they’ve been hitting me up since my freshman year,” he said. “They’ve been in contact more now that more offers have been coming in and I’ve just been talking to everyone from Michigan State - the reporters, the coaches, and even the fans and some of the players that are committing there.”

On Alabama

“That’s one of the most prestigious schools out there,” he said. “It’s a huge offer for anyone - especially from where I’m from in San Antonio, not many guys have had offers from them around here. We’re going to see how family-oriented the coaches are, if they could be showing love towards their players or if they’re just hardcore football all the time.”

RIVALS REACTION

Bush said that he would like to have things sorted out before the start of his senior season, so the fervor that has characterized his recruitment will continue to be pretty high until he’s able to make the necessary rounds before the end of summer. It doesn’t take much to see what has programs so infatuated with him; he’s a prototypical outside receiver that’s as fast as he is long.

He’s clearly looking for inclusive personal relationships with the teams recruiting him, and with so many of his offers coming so recently, a surprise early decision doesn’t seem likely. Bush is from also from military family and has lived all over the country - and abroad - and said he’s not overly concerned about making a choice based on geography.
