4-Star WR Tommy Bush ready for visits after a very busy spring

SAN ANTONIO, Tx. -- Tommy Bush looked down at his bloody knees at a training session at a soccer complex on Saturday and just shook his head.

“This happens every single time,” he said.

The scrapes and scratches all down his legs serve as a reminder of all the work that he’s been doing this spring as he’s collected offers from around the country at a whirlwind pace. Many of those coaches made it a point to stop by Clemens High School to check up on him over the past few weeks.

By all indications, those efforts are going to have to continue indefinitely if all those programs are going to keep up with each other when it comes to his recruitment. Bush said that he has no plans to trim his list of considered teams before even the end of the season, so with summer approaching, his message back to all those that have made him a priority is that things are still very much wide-open.

“There were always like three to five (coaches) just standing on the sidelines, watching me run routes,” he said of his spring practices. “Afterwards I’d give them a call, get some feedback … Most of them said they thought I was pretty good; that I did well coming out of my hips for my size, but just to work on my hand-eye coordination and come out of those breaks faster.”

Bush said that among the schools that he’s felt positive attention from and that have visited him in recent weeks include teams like Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, among others. In the meantime, he’s also found time to sneak in visits to Baylor and Texas A&M in state as well.

IN HIS WORDS

On Baylor, where training partner and three-star DB J.T. Woods recently committed

“I am going to talk to J.T. about it,” he said. “But I already know how Baylor is, we’ve already been up there like five times. We know the coaches very well and I talk with them quite often; I text with them every day and they’re good people too.”

On Michigan State

“Just the fact that they have been there since like my first five offers, I’ve just been talking with them every day,” he said. “I’m hoping to get up there and see everything in person, they came down to see me running some routes when they came down this spring.”

On Notre Dame

“I’m considering them because Coach (Del) Alexander has been hitting me up every day,” he said. “They actually came to my school just to see me in person and so I could see what type of man he was. It opened my eyes, just the way talks to me and motivates me ... I am going to show them the same interest that they’ve been showing me.”

On Oklahoma

“They know they’re going to be a dominant passing team,” he said. “With the offensive coordinator coming back, they’re going to keep spreading the ball out and that’s what’s opened my eyes to Oklahoma because I know they’re going to pass the ball at a good rate.”

On Oklahoma State

“I’ve really been liking Coach (Kasey) Dunn a lot,” he said. “He’s a very good receivers coach. It’s interesting when you look at (OU and Oklahoma State) because they’re both just throwing the ball around all over the field and have dominant receivers. You look at James Washington from last season and Chris Lacy going to be a senior this year, they have a good tradition of just stacking up receivers and throwing the ball downfield.”

On Texas A&M

“A&M has a beautiful facility,” he said. “Coach (Aaron) Moorehead gets straight to the point with things - and so does coach (Kevin) Sumlin. We just had a nice one-on-one talk with them for a long time and they were just telling us about the history of receivers and what they planned on doing on offense.”

“I liked A&M and going to come back again because they’re right here,” he said. “They said that they’re only thinking about taking two receivers in this class and they don’t really throw around offers like that. I know that they’re pretty serious about me, so that’s what makes that offer special to me.”

RIVALS REACTION

Bush still seemingly has as much to digest when it comes to his recruitment as those following it. With so many out-of-state programs still in the picture, keeping a close eye on where he’s able to visit this summer should give an idea about where his focus is shifting. Bush is the picture of what most think of when imagining an ideal outside wide receiver with good speed and a huge catch radius, so it’s easy to see him in a role with many of the teams that have been actively recruiting him this spring.
