With the pool of top uncommitted players in Texas ending the season much thinner than it began, more of the focus turns to players like Alief Taylor wide receiver Shea Whiting.

The three-star recruit was one of the more unheralded - however productive - wide receivers on the camp circuit this offseason, turning in top performances at the Houston event of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas, among others. After a couple of visits and discussions with coaches from the schools recruiting him, his options have begun to veer towards a quartet of regional programs heading into the fall.

Among the schools that ended the summer in most contact with him, Whiting said the efforts of Southern Miss and Texas Tech stood out most. He said that he likely would have taken summer officials to each had he not started a summer job that kept him from having too much time available to do so.

IN HIS WORDS

On Southern Miss

“When I took my unofficial there to watch their spring game, they sat me down and showed me some things that they didn’t show everybody,” he said. “They have a great, loving coaching staff and I think that it would be a nice place to go.”

“I thought it was pretty nice,” he said. “I think they just changed to adidas jerseys and those looked pretty nice and the facility and stadium was pretty cool.”

On Texas Tech

“With Tech it’s been a constant checking in with me to see how I’m doing and seeing where my head is at,” he said. “They haven’t been too aggressive or anything, they’ve just been checking in on me to make sure that everything is going well and making sure that I’m having a good summer.”

“They’ve actually talked to me about how they run the spread, their offense is wide-open and they move the ball around a lot,” he said. “That stands out about a school when you’re a wide receiver, but Tech seems like a place that would get the ball to me.”

On UTEP

“I actually haven’t been able to do a whole lot of research, but they have been sending me a lot of information that I think are really nice,” he said. “I just can’t say until I get on the campus and see it with my own eyes, but from what I hear from the coaches it’s nice out there.”
