3-Star CB JayVeon Cardwell talks SEC offers, summer visits

CIBOLO, Tx. -- JayVeon Cardwell has enjoyed his recruitment this spring but it could be coming to an end soon.

The three-star cornerback from Cibolo-Steele said that he would like to have a commitment made by the end of June. Several Power Five programs are in the hunt for that decision, but Cardwell said that he intends to make some visits in the coming weeks, so that should give a pretty strong indication about where his head is at.

The teams most likely on his shortlist include Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, and Vanderbilt.

Cardwell plays in the same secondary that includes Baylor commit J.T. Woods and recent Texas commit Caden Sterns. He also turned in a strong performance at the Rivals Three Stripe Camp presented by Adidas event in Dallas last month.

IN HIS WORDS

On Ole Miss

“I definitely have been staying in touch with the coaching staff,” he said. “I’m really high on them, they’re really high on me, and they’re one of my top choices right now. That would be a place I can see myself playing.”

“I want to be there this summer and see the atmosphere and see how it feels,” he said. “Coach (Bradley Dale) Peveto, he’s the main coach that stays in contact with me daily with texts to make sure things are good and I’m feeling well.”

On Oklahoma State

“Oklahoma State is also a top choice for me,” he said. “I talk with Coach (Mike) Gundy a lot and I also talk with Coach (Tim) Duffie. They really, really want me there but I wanna get out and see the college.”

On Vanderbilt, where he plans on attending an upcoming Friday Night Lights event

“They’re one of the first schools that offered me,” he said. “I wanna go out there and see them again for a second visit. They’re definitely building up; I went to their training facilities and they work hard. All their players take their job seriously, practices are very intense.”

RIVALS REACTION

One last school that can’t be counted out is Texas Tech. Cardwell plans on visiting the second weekend in June for a prospect camp.

“They want to see me compete out there,” he said. “They want to see me do press-man and work on my man-coverage skills in general.”

Cardwell has shown this spring that he’s a capable cover-corner with sound instincts in coverage. He’s got good size and would be a sound addition to any of the discussed teams’ secondaries. If he sticks to his plan, he seems far enough along with a few schools to feel comfortable making that end-of-June decision but it’s still up in the air if he’s going to give any hints about it beforehand.

“I never really thought about it, but yeah, I think I should make a Top 5,” he said. “After that, just stay in the loop with those coaches.”
