CEDAR HILL, Tex. -- At last month’s Pylon 7-on-7 National Championships, Jalen Curry said that he felt Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher has made him a top priority in the 2019 class.

This week, he’ll be looking to further grow that foundation with Fisher and rest of the Seminoles program when he makes a visit to Tallahassee on July 19.

“I’m really just looking to build that relationship with Coach Jimbo Fisher more and all of the coaches, really,” he said. “I also want to get a look at the academic side of Florida State, what they focus on there, and really just sit back and enjoy myself.”

Florida State has been a fixture on the Houston recruiting scene, and a few recently-added players from the area have been in Curry’s ear looking to convince him to come aboard as well. Since he picked up his offer from the Seminoles in March, there has been plenty of opportunity for the two parties to get more familiar with each other through mutual connections.

“The relationship has developed a lot - I know a lot of people that go to Florida State,” he said. “(Dontavious) Jackson is like my cousin and of course, Marvin Wilson as well, so I stay in touch with them about it and they say they love it.”

By now, Curry’s first offer from Auburn seems like a distant memory, but the Tigers were first to see what everyone else has for some time since then; that he has the talent to match the elite size he brings to his position. He said that has been one of the main things that the FSU staff has emphasized while recruiting him.

“Coach Fisher … tells me how they like using big wide receivers,” he said. “He said that all he needs is a quarterback to throw me the ball and the rest will take care of itself.”

RIVALS REACTION

Curry’s consideration of Texas A&M has been scrutinized a little more heavily since the commitment of Grant Gunnell earlier this summer. The two are close friends and while current Seminoles with ties to Houston might be communicating with him on occasion, Gunnell is right around the corner at all times. Still, Curry hesitates to acknowledge that it’s a two-team race between the Aggies and Seminoles.

“Maybe, but other schools are out there too,” he said. “I’m still talking with others so we’re going to have to see.”
