2018 WR Gabriel Douglas cool about recruitment heating up

2018 Denton-Ryan wide receiver Gabriel Douglas is still waiting on his first offer, but he’s certainly already put himself on the radar of several top programs.

Oklahoma and Alabama have shown early interest in the big receiver, who finished last week’s win over Frisco-Lone Star with four catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. Douglas burst onto the scene this season with a season-opening performance where he pulled in 11 catches for 190 yards and two scores.

“I was surprised,” he said. “Surprised, excited and happy. It’s a humbling experience to start hearing from them.”

Douglas has ideal size and speed at the position and is as adept at shedding tacklers as he is outrunning them, but he prides himself on more than just his physical gifts.

“I think some of the best things I do are just running my routes and blocking,” he said.

While everyone waits to see who the first team will be to extend an offer his way, it’s clear that he is still learning about the teams interested in him as well.

“They got some good players there, I like the head coach, I like the coaching staff,” he said about Oklahoma. “I haven’t picked which game I want to go to yet, but they’ve talked to me about coming up there.”

He was only slightly more specific about Alabama.

“I’ve watched Calvin Ridley, he’s good,” he said. “I like how he plays, he speed, watching him like that.”

Douglas is a big part of a high-powered Ryan offense and it won’t be long until things start becoming more involved with his recruitment. He is a favorite target of quarterback Spencer Sanders and is as much of a home run threat as he is a chain-mover in the intermediate passing game.
