The Clemson Tigers received a welcome surprise on Thursday night when the No. 1 overall player in the class of 2018 announced his commitment via Twitter. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who had previously named a top two of Clemson and Georgia, kept his remarks short and sweet in his reveal.
"After a long and thoughtful process I am blessed to announce that I'm committed to Clemson," Lawrence wrote.
The decision ends months of speculation for Lawrence, who looked like he would originally announce a decision prior to the start of the 2016 season. Ultimately he delayed, leading his team to a second consecutive state championship and sprinkling in visits to Georgia, Clemson, LSU and Alabama.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound prospect is one of the most prolific passers in Georgia history and despite playing just three seasons has already amassed more than 10,000 passing yards and 118 touchdowns with just 20 interceptions.
Clemson currently has two quarterbacks committed in the class of 2017, five-star Hunter Johnson and four-star Chase Brice. The Tigers also signed a four-star quarterback in 2015 and 2016, Kelly Bryant and Zerrick Cooper, both of whom are still on the roster. Junior Deshaun Watson is expected to leave school following the conclusion of this season for the NFL Draft.
