Wisconsin offer was big for Kyren Williams

CHICAGO – St. Louis (Mo.) St. John Vianney class of 2019 wide receiver Kyren Williams added his third offer of the recruiting process last week from the Wisconsin Badgers, and it was an offer he was already planning on camping for this summer.

THE LATEST

Nebraska struck first in this recruitment when they offered Williams after seeing him at their summer camp prior to his sophomore season, and the rising junior recently visited Lincoln again two weekends ago for the Cornhuskers spring game. Iowa followed with offer No. 2 just last month, and Wisconsin became the third team to the table with their tender on Saturday. Williams was already planning to attend a Wisconsin camp on June 2 to work for that offer, but the Badgers had apparently already seen what they needed.

IN HIS WORDS

“That offer was big and I hope there are many more to come. They weren’t really talking to me and I was expecting to talk to them when I went up for the camp. Then, when (my coach) called me said he wanted me to call Coach (Ted) Gilmore, I was surprised. I called them (Saturday) morning to talk to Coach Gilmore. We talked about the position recruiting-wise and he told me they were going to extend an offer to me. He wants me to come up there for the June 2nd camp to really nail down what position they want to recruit me as.”

RIVALS’ REACTION

Sunday was my first time seeing the 5-foot-10, 177-pound Williams in live action and he met expectations. His height was already known, and as a slot wide receiver is not that big of a deal. What was impressive, though, was how solidly he is built, especially for a sophomore in high school. Physically he reminded me of A.J. Taylor, whom Wisconsin signed out of Missouri in the 2016 class. Nebraska is probably the early team to beat here after they were his only offer for nine months and several visits have been made, but Wisconsin obviously held considerable interest for Williams even before the offer considering it was the only school he scheduled to camp for an offer two months in advance.
