Ryan Willis' second offer was the product of his arm. It had little to do with his game film or the buzz surrounding his name. He earned his recent invitation from Illinois by simply throwing the football in front of a college coach.
Old fashioned? In a way. But the Shawnee (Kan.) Bishop Miege junior quarterback certainly doesn't mind.
"It's really nice to have the offer," Willis said. "Coach [Bill] Cubit from Illinois came out, saw me throw this morning and offered on the spot. I guess I must have made an impression on him."
And so the process of exploring the Illinois program has begun. Willis doesn't pretend to know everything about the newest school involved in his recruitment. He does, however, like what he's heard so far.
"We talked about the school in general and about the program," Willis said. "I'm going to try to learn more about it in the future because I really like Cubit. He's a good guy. And it's a great academic school. I've been looking for that."
The Illini join Kansas State on Willis' offer list, but more schools could join in the fun soon. Indiana and Iowa State dropped by Bishop Miege to get a look at Willis on Monday. Oklahoma State and Tulsa are scheduled to appear next week.
"Everything seems to be heating up after that dead period," Willis said. "I've been talking to Oklahoma State and Iowa State for a while, so those relationships are there. I've only talked to Indiana a little so far."
As a junior, Willis helped Bishop Miege a 9-2 record. He threw for 2,267 yards and 23 touchdowns despite missing a pair of games with a concussion.
