Williams talks about in-state commitment

After a big junior season, Vernon, Texas safety prospect Darien Williams picked up a scholarship offer recently and didn't want to wait long to make a decision.
Williams, the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder had a 2006 season that included more than 130 tackles, three interceptions, 12 pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries. He even played on the offensive side of the ball at quarterback. The defensive back, who describes himself as a "run stopper," picked up an early in-state offer and decided it was time to get the recruiting process out of the way.

"I'm going to North Texas," Williams said. "They were the first to offer and give me a chance. I went ahead and took it because I wanted to get everything out of the way. I wanted to get it done, commit, and go out and have a good season.
"I've also watched coach (Todd) Dodge on television for a long time at Southlake Carroll. When they called me, I was excited. I always wondered what it would be like to be coached by him. I'm going up there on June 17 for a camp."
Williams says that he will bring a lot to the table at North Texas as a safety who can make the big hit.
"I can cover the pass pretty well, but I like to be around the action and make a hit," he said. "I can still drop back and play in pass coverage, but I'm a run-stopper."
The all-district selection doesn't anticipate looking at any other schools after making his decision for UNT.
"I like North Texas, it's not too far from home but not too close either," Williams said. "I really don't see myself fitting in anywhere as well. I see myself best at North Texas."
