Wienke takes home MVP honors

BOULDER, Colo. - Picking up MVP honors among the quarterbacks, Tuscola (Ill.) High School quarterback John Wienke was certainly satisfied with his performance at Saturday's NIKE Training Camp.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder has several scholarship offers already at this point in the recruiting process. Colorado, Iowa State, Kentucky, Miami University, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, and Wyoming are a few of those. Wienke said after the camp he was excited about having the opportunity to show his stuff and compete.

"I come from a small school and it's hard to get yourself out there," Wienke said. "So that's what June has been for. It's about getting out to the big schools and just getting my name out there."
The NIKE Camp certainly won't be the last visit for Wienke.
"I've got a lot of possible visits," Wienke said. "Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Kansas is another one I'm thinking about going to. I just have to see what happens in the next couple of weeks. I might figure out a couple more camps to go to."
With several offers in hand and more possibly on the way, Wienke says he has an early top three.
"I'd have to say Iowa, Purdue, and Colorado," Wienke said. "You know they just all have great tradition. They may have a down year, but they're building each program and they will be on the rise. It also seems like a family atmosphere at each school."
In 14 games as a junior, Weinke threw for 3,221 yards and 33 touchdowns, leading his team to the Class 2A state title. He earned all-state honors that year as well.
