STATE CHAMPION: Georgia

Kirby Smart, a Georgia native, was brought in to help lock down the state borders and he did a very good job of doing exactly that in the 2017 class. The Bulldogs signed six of the top 10 players in the Peach State, highlighted by five-star quarterback Jake Fromm (No. 3 in state). But the recruit that was key to the Bulldogs’ success was four-star defensive back Richard Lecounte (No. 7). After being one of Smart’s first commitments, he helped recruit other Peach State prospects, including Fromm, Nate McBride (No. 8), Deangelo Gibbs (No. 12) and others.

HONORABLE MENTION: Clemson

The Tigers had a small recruiting class this year, but four of the school’s 14 signees came from the state of Georgia. The group was highlighted by the state’s No. 2 player, five-star defensive back A.J. Terrell. Joining him was Rivals250 defensive back LeAnthony Williams, as well as four-star quarterback Chase Brice. The Tigers national championship team featured several key players from the Peach State, including QB DeShaun Watson, and it will serve as a pipeline state for the school.

SURPRISINGLY WEAK: Alabama

It’s hard to believe, but the Tide signed just one player from the state of Georgia in the 2017 class. The lone player was a good one in Rivals100 defensive back Xavier McKinney, but several players like Gibbs and Fromm once looked like Tide locks and were poached away by Georgia. It’s the second straight year that Alabama has only signed one player from the state, something that hasn’t been the case historically. Recruiting nationally has changed that some, but the state has too much talent for the Tide to miss on a consistent basis.

OUT-OF-REGION THREAT: Stanford

The Cardinal landed two prospects from the state of Georgia, but most importantly one of them was five-star quarterback Davis Mills. The signal-caller was the state’s top player and was pursued from schools from all over the country. Stanford also landed the state’s No. 52 player, Stuart Head, a safety that was recruited by Clemson and others. The Cardinal will never sign more than a few Georgia players, but when they’re taking them from other Southeast teams it’s worth noting.
