The 5-11, 178-pound standout saw early interest from the likes of Oklahoma State, Baylor, and Texas. Baylor and Texas talked about him as a defensive back, but for the most part programs wanted him for his abilities with the ball in his hands.
The interest had Whigham setting big plans for the summer camp season. SMU, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas were all on the schedule, but before he could hit the road he suffered an injury that put him on the sidelines all summer.
"It was really a freak accident," Whigham said. "It was about the first week of summer I was at a friend's house and they had a brand new pool and diving board and the diving board split and I hit my foot and scraped off the skin on the top of four of my toes. I couldn't wear a shoe for about a month and a half."
He was extremely disappointed he was unable to attend any summer camps, but now that he is healthy he is doing what he can to show what he brings to the table. He is playing a little more defense and is Keeping an open mind when it comes to college programs.
Coaches from New Mexico, Texas State, Texas Tech, and Abilene Christian have been in touch most recently and Whigham hopes to take a few unofficial visits in the near future.
"I've been trying to get a free weekend," Whigham said. "I think we're going to head out Texas State and Tech. This weekend I think I might go to the West Virginia/Tech game."
He is keeping an open mind when it comes to the recruiting process, but he does have a lot of history with one Texas program.
"I grew up an Aggie," Whigham said. "My grandpa went there and my dad went there and my cousins went through there and I've been going to those games since I could walk. My dad was in the Corps all through college and they have reunions and we go down there every time they have reunions. I definitely grew up an Aggie."
Over the course of his career at Midland Christian, he has picked up honors from all-district, to all-area and all-state, and been a standout on both sides of the ball. He prides himself on leaving everything he has on the field and is ready to prove to college programs he has what it takes.
In 2012, Whigham has rushed for 717 yards and 16 TDs, and has 11 receptions for 202 yards through six games. He tries to model himself after Tim Tebow, and is doing his best to show coaches what he has to offer.
"They're going to get a player who's going to go 110-percent every play, " Whigham said. "If we're down 60-6 in the fourth quarter I'm still going to be going 110-percent. In the offseason I'm going to work. I'm never satisfied," Whigham said. "I'm going to give 110-percent every time. I pride myself on being that person who on 3rd and 5 the coach can trust to throw the ball to or hand the ball to, or I want to be that defensive back you put on the best wide receiver out. I know I can do that. I know I can do it for any team on and off the field."
