One of the best players we saw during the summer passing tournaments is also one of the best players we've seen in pads early this season. Huntington Beach (Calif.) Edison two way standout Dominque Vinson was just named Orange County athlete of the week and is having a great season but we're wondering if colleges are taking notice.
Vinson, 5-10, 160 pounds is one of the state's top player at both cornerback and receiver. He was named league defensive back of the year as a junior and is making a strong case for all-state recognition this year.
Playing against a very tough and talented Anaheim (Calif.) Servite team last weekend, Vinson caught 10 balls for 187 yards and two touchdowns and also returned an interception for a 45 yard touchdown late in the game to seal the win. On the season, Vinson has 23 catches for 328 yards and five touchdowns and two interceptions, both of which he returned for scores.
There is no question in our eyes that Vinson is a high Div I prospect on both sides of the ball but he's still waiting for his first scholarship offer at this time.
"Yeah, I'm still waiting for that first one to come in," Vinson said. "It can be a little frustrating at times but it's not something I have any control over so I try to not let it bother me. I just go out and try and play as hard as I can and hopefully everything will take care of itself."
Vinson has received his calls this month from Arizona, Mississippi, Purdue (brother Terrell is on the team) and San Diego State.
"All of the schools have said the same thing, they're waiting on senior film before they offer," Vinson said. "So I'm going to get that out to them pretty soon here. We have another big game this week against Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei and that's really where my focus is right now.
"As far as the recruiting process goes, I want to take my trips after the season. I really don't see myself taking all five. I'll probably just two or three and then make my decision but it depends on who offers. I'm just staying open right now and don't really have a favorite. The one school I've always liked is Virginia Tech but they don't recruit out here very often. Still, I've always liked them because of their defense and it would be great to be recruited by them."
