We haven't seen too many tapes more impressive than Oak Park (Calif.) athlete Sean Westgate. In fact, when you watch Westgate closely, you can't help but be reminded by a former standout linebacker-safety from the Southern CA region who went on to earn All-American honors in college.
Westgate, 5-11, 185 pounds did a little of everything for Oak Park a year ago. He earned all-league, all-CIF and honorable mention all-state underclass honors a year ago after totaling 117 tackles, six sacks and two interceptions, one he returned for a touchdown.
Westgate jumps off the screen when you watch his tape. He plays linebacker and is moved all over the field at Oak Park. He's an explosive hitter with great instincts and always seems to be a step ahead of everyone else on the field.
The athlete excels in run support and runs right through opposing ball carriers. He's great on the blitz, can drop back in to coverage and his football instincts are as good as we've seen.
After just a few plays of watching Westgate, we were instantly reminded of former Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei and USC standout Matt Grootegoed.
"You know a lot of coaches have told me that," Oak Park coach Brian Crum said. "Sean plays at top speed all the time and is the most dynamic athlete we've ever had here. He's just a great football player and recruiting has really picked up for him as of late.
"Arizona offered awhile ago and San Diego State and Boise State have offered now as well. He's hearing from a lot of other schools and is very close to picking up a few more offers in the next week or so.
"Washington State was by last week and said they will be offering soon. Oregon was here this week and is going to offer as well. They loved his film and said they just wanted to eye ball him first, Nevada said the same thing.
"I think Sean wants to commit somewhere before the season starts in the fall but he doesn't have one school that stands out right now. The plan is Sean and I along with his family will meet after Spring and sort things out depending on who has offered and who is showing interest.
"I know he wants to take some unofficial visits to the schools that have offered him. As for camps, again, we're going to see who is showing interest and then go from there, we're not going to camp at a school that doesn't seem to be interested in him."
Westgate will be in attendance at the NIKE Camp at Stanford later in May.
