West Virginia now has its quarterback in the Class of 2018 as three-star Bolivar (Tenn.) Central Trey Lowe made his pledge to the Mountaineers official Tuesday afternoon.

"West Virginia was really the best fit for me and I've had that feeling for a little while now," said Lowe, who recently visited Morgantown. "I have a chance to go there and play two sports and play in an explosive offense and I think I can contribute there and be successful."

The Mountaineers honed in on Lowe after offensive coordinator Jake Spavital traveled to Tennessee to watch him throw in the spring. Since then the relationship between the pair developing quickly.

"The first time Coach Spavital saw me threw he knew right then that he wanted me and I really like that about him," Lowe said. "He's a real down to Earth coach and we have connected very well."

The wildcard in Lowe's recruitment was his insistence to play both football and baseball and he said West Virginia laid out a plan for him to compete in both sports. That helped seal the deal when it came to his commitment.

"Coach Spavital has a good history of having players that do both sports, so that was really important to me," Lowe said. "I always knew that I wanted to play both sports. I've been doing it my entire life so I always wanted to do it in college. I talked with them about it and they were right on board with it. They like me playing baseball."

As far as his fit in the Mountaineers scheme, Lowe said he will be a passer first but also plans on using his legs to hurt Big 12 defenses.

"I’m a passer first and they see that," Lowe said. "I can use my ability to run and they’ll implement that way. I like the vision they have for me."

Depending on how things go with Will Grier's junior season, Lowe could find himself in a quarterback battle as soon as next year. He said regardless of how it shakes out, he's ready to compete when the time comes.

"Will Grier is a really good quarterback and if he does what he's capable of he’ll probably be a draft pick soon," Lowe said. "So I should have a chance to go in and compete and that's all you can ask for."

Lowe is commitment No. 11 for West Virginia in the Class of 2018 and assuming he signs with the school in December will be the first player from Tennessee to sign with the school since four-star quarterback Barry Brunetti in 2010.
