West spotlight: A dozen impressive spring performers

RELATED: Pac-12 breakdown: Top 2018 needs

There have been plenty of camps and 7-on-7 tournaments since National Signing Day and a number of prospects have performed well on the road. With the Los Angeles stop of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas set for this Sunday, here is a look at 12 impressive performers in the West so far this spring.

Recruiting: Texas and USC have recently been involved with Angilau, who also has Utah, Oregon and many others on his list.

Overview: Angilau is an impressive physical presence at 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds and he showed off a ferocious, non-stop motor when playing defensive tackle. Many schools also like Angilau along the offensive line and it makes sense since he doesn’t back down from contact. If anything, he looks for it.

Recruiting: Oregon and UCLA are the early frontrunners for Ezeike, who said Nebraska, Tennessee, Miami and TCU have been reaching out more often.

Overview: There’s a highlight clip of a defensive back trying to press Ezeike at the line during a recent camp and he basically pushes him over and wins the rep. That’s what makes the 6-foot-5, 210-pound receiver such an interesting prospect and someone who has stood out this spring. He’s big and physical and has shown off excellent hands at numerous events.

Recruiting: Fuller is committed to Nebraska.

Overview: Speed, speed and more speed. Fuller has excelled at numerous events this offseason by running by defensive backs and making big catches. The four-star creates space with ease, he’s an incredibly smooth route runner and then he has the speed and athleticism to catch up to any pass. The Huskers are getting a big-time playmaker who can stretch the field.

Recruiting: UCLA and Washington have piqued Lamb’s interest but Oregon, Penn State, Stanford and others are also involved.

Overview: Lamb has the downhill ability to play inside and the speed and cover ability to move outside. Either way, the four-star has been excellent this spring and in some highly difficult cover situations has really performed well. Lamb has the length and athleticism to stick with receivers and then tip passes away. All over the field, the four-star has been excellent.

Recruiting: Maldonado is committed to UCLA.

Overview: Maldonado has probably not received the recruiting attention he deserves but UCLA smartly offered in recent weeks and the three-star jumped at the chance. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound defensive tackle is tough and hard-nosed up the middle but also surprisingly agile to beat interior offensive linemen. Maldonado can bull rush and beat people up the middle in a variety of ways. He should be a tremendous asset for the Bruins.

Recruiting: Cal, Hawaii, Oregon State, UNLV, Vanderbilt and Washington State have offered so far.

Overview: The only time we’ve seen Mauga this offseason was at the adidas 7v7 National Championships in Las Vegas and he had a memorable performance. He’s fast, fluid and he loves to play physically in the middle, checking receivers on crossing routes all the time. With pads on, and with that athletic ability, Mauga looks like someone who can come down and isn’t afraid to lay the wood.

Recruiting: McKee remains wide open to all programs and recently visited Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, North Carolina and Duke and will soon take a trip to Texas. Stanford and BYU had been early frontrunners.

Overview: There are plenty of talented pro-style quarterbacks in the West this recruiting cycle but McKee continues to prove he’s right up there with the best. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound recruit looked great at a recent 7on7 tournament, showed off a huge arm and excellent touch on all his passes. With his athletic ability and some passes he’s made this offseason, McKee could be a special prospect.

Recruiting: Osborne is committed to Washington.

Overview: There might not have been a more productive receiver through the spring than Osborne, who has excellent speed on the outside and absolutely fantastic hands where he can go and catch anything. Some other receivers in the West are ranked ahead of him but Osborne has the ability and the athleticism to be an excellent target for the Huskies.

Recruiting: Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, San Jose State, UCLA and Washington State have offered so far.

Overview: One of the biggest surprises this spring has been Shakir, who has been fantastic at every stop along the way. He can get open against almost any defensive back but even when he’s covered up, Shakir has shown the ability to make some of the most difficult catches. The three-star has excellent hands and he could be a steal for some school in this class.

Recruiting: USC is considered a front-runner but Ohio State, Florida State, Auburn, Michigan, Georgia, Nebraska, Oregon and many others are involved as well.

Overview: Taylor-Stuart is ranked as the fourth-best cornerback in the 2018 class and that might not be doing him enough justice. The 6-foot-2 corner is physical when he needs to be, athletic when he needs to make a play on the ball and his length really helps him stay with even the top receivers. At one tournament, he did get beaten at times but in every other camp or tourney, Taylor-Stuart was fantastic.

Recruiting: Alabama, Florida State, USC, UCLA and many others are involved with Williams, who remains open to all programs. Stanford and Washington have been showing new interest.

Overview: Williams is one of the most intriguing prospects in this class because of his size, length and athleticism. The four-star who’s listed at 6-foot-4 and 196 pounds has been special at receiver this spring even though he hasn’t played the position much. Williams can also play safety or outside linebacker but as a fast, athletic outside receiver, the four-star could keep moving up the charts.

Recruiting: Woodbey is committed to Ohio State.

Overview: Woodbey has stopped flirting with playing both ways and it’s benefitted him because he’s been locking down top receivers all spring. There are times when he’s too physical on the outside but he’s been great in coverage, showed he can play corner or safety and he’s tested himself – and beaten – some top receivers through the spring.
