Three-star Oakland (Calif.) Wilson Prep safety DeAndre West believes that actions speak louder than words.
When West was informed several weeks ago by his aunt that he had been selected for the inaugural Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he didn't do a lot screaming, shouting, or celebrating. As is his nature, he cracked a smile and kept quiet about it.
That doesn't mean he wasn't excited.
"I was happy about it," West said. "I didn't even know about it until my aunt came to school and told me about the game. I never thought I'd be invited to an all-star game."
West says he's isn't out to prove anything during the week of practice or in the game. He just wants to represent California, the West Coast, and meet some new people along the way.
"I'll probably come up with some goals as we get closer to the game," West said. "But, I just want to play."
As for playing style, West describes himself as both a solid defensive back in run support and coverage.
"I just know how to cover people," West said. "It's hard to describe it."
West made an early commitment to Nebraska and maintains that he's still interested in going there. However, sources indicate that both West and Nebraska are looking at other options. He currently holds scholarship offers from the likes of Arizona, Colorado, San Diego State, and Boise State.
"It's been a while since I spoke with Nebraska," West said. "I lost my phone, so I haven't been in close contact with them lately."
