Week 9: Lawrence vs. Fields

Another week is in the books and the top two prospects in the country accounted for another nine touchdowns. Trevor Lawrence again only played the first half, and both he and Justin Fields made plays and led their schools to victory.

It was 56-0 at halftime and Lawrence was already 15-19 passing for 284 yards and four touchdown passes. It was just another game for the No. 1 prospect in the country.

Cartersville (Ga.) is playing at a very high level right now. They have not lost a game since December 2015. Lawrence has led his team to two straight titles and they will be hard to stop in 2017 as they go for the three-peat.

The biggest take away from this game was, Lawrence passed Jake Fromm to become No. 2 all-time in the state of Georgia for passing yards. Deshaun Watson is No. 1 and Lawrence is closing fast on the Tennessee Texan.

The Clemson commit is now just a few yards shy of 13,000 for his career and he is only 116 yards shy of the record. He is only six touchdowns away from the state record as well, so that could happen this week or in game 10 later this month.

Douglasville (Ga.) Chapel Hill is next for Cartersville as they look to improve to 9-0. Many eyes will be on Lawrence, like they normally are, but even more this game due to the record being within reach.

The game for Fields was a little tighter — at least at the beginning.

Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison and Austell (Ga.) South Cobb traded touchdowns to start the game on the first two possessions, then it was all Fields and Hoyas from there on.

Fields finished with five scores on the night and Harrison won the game 42-13. The No. 2 prospect that recently committed to Georgia finished with three passing touchdowns and he added two rushing. He was 18-25 for 247 yards passing and he rushed the ball 10 times for 42 yards.

He now has 34 total touchdowns in seven games this season.

What stands out most about Fields is how he continues to improve as a passer. He is keeping his eyes down field and threw a couple of lasers in this game, then showed the touch as well. That is scary because he is a true dual-threat quarterback, so he will take a whole new dynamic to the quarterback room in Athens.

Fields will play on a short week as he leads Harrison against Dalton (Ga.) on Thursday night. This game is likely for the Region championship.
