Wake commit firm as ever

Channing Schofield helped Wagener (S.C.) Wagener-Salley High to the second round of the playoffs with strong play at quarterback and cornerback. The Wake Forest pledge said he is happy that his decision is over so he doesn’t have to worry about recruiting.
“I’m a firm commitment to Wake Forest,” Schofield said. “I still talk to coach Keith Herring, who is my recruiting coordinator. He’s a nice guy, and all the coaches there were really nice. That was a big factor in my decision. The coach-player relationship is really strong there, and they made me feel much better, really comfortable. And playing in the ACC and at a top notch university like Wake Forest really gives me the best of both worlds.”

Schofield said that he is only planning an official visit to Wake Forest, but that he would have to reschedule because of a new conflict that emerged in recent days.
“I was supposed to take my official visit December 4, but I can’t take it because of the North-South All-Star game that I’ll be playing in,” he said. “That’s on the same day, so I’ll have to reschedule my visit and everything.”
His official visit won’t be the first time Schofield has been on the Winston-Salem campus, though.
“I was at the Florida State game, and even though they lost they showed a lot of effort,” Schofield said. “The other recruits there were happy to see me there with them, and now I’m ready to get on the road down there. My parents enjoyed the campus and the whole experience down there also. They said they liked it a lot and that they could get used to coming and seeing me down there. I cut all the other coaches from other schools loose after that visit.”
Though he is the first in his family to go to Wake Forest, Schofield is hoping he won’t be the last. He said that a relative may be joining him on campus in the future.
“Coach Herring also offered a scholarship to my cousin, Ronnie Tyler,” he said. “He’s the running back for us at Wagener-Salley, and he had 1200 yards and 14 touchdowns as junior this year. He says that he likes Georgia a lot, but he told me that he likes the way Wake uses their running backs. He was with me at the Florida State game, and he said he had a real good time, and he really liked the atmosphere there.”
