VTO Dallas: Edwards impresses

DALLAS -- The VTO Top 100 camp dodged some spotty weather and hosted almost 100 players from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Nebraska made it out and took full advantage of the learning and competition at the camp.

Several players' performance stood out among the crowd and those players were recognized amongst their peers at the end of the camp.

The quarterbacks were the largest group at the camp, with players entering their senior year of high school all the way down to freshmen. It was a very diverse group and ultimately the staff awarded Garland, Tex., signal caller Trent Edwards with the MVP for his performance. Others standing out amongst the group were Waco, Tex., junior Sam Glaesman and McKinney, Tex., junior Seth Washington. A class of 2017 player who is just beginning his high school career but will be worth keeping an eye on down the road was Allen, Tex., quarterback J. Mitchell Jonke. For his age, he threw a very good ball and had good footwork as well.

The big men in the trenches weren't the largest group of the camp but they took advantage of that with a larger number of quality reps with their coaches. Wylie, Tex., offensive lineman Castin Nuemeyer stood out the most with his impressive frame and footwork. He was awarded with the offensive line MVP for his efforts.

Not to be outdone, the defensive linemen were equally impressive. Midwest City, Okla., tackle Dejai Johnson took home the MVP award for his group with an impressive showing of hand work and speed throughout the day. Little Rock, Ark., defensive end Marcus Devine also looked the part, challenging opponents with his speed rush.

The linebackers were a broad spectrum of players both young and old with varying skill sets. Mesquite, Tex., standout C.J. Hill took home the MVP honors with an impressive performance, but was pushed all day by Fort Worth, Tex., junior Derrick Mayweather, who also had a very good day and picked up the camp award for sleeper player.

The defensive backs had a very solid showing, especially in the one-on-one drills. Desoto, Tex., cornerback Preston Grase, who attends a charter school in Red Oak, was very impressive throughout the day. Edging him out for the MVP award was Alvin Green from Duncanville, Tex.

The group of receivers that battled the defensive backs all day were not completely shut out, as they had their share of big plays as well. Jacksonville, Ark., speedster Tobias Enlow took home the MVP award, but fellow receiver Kevin Bell of Duncanville, Tex., and tight end Andrew Finlayson, who is homeschooled, both showed flashes during the one-on-one drills.

The group of running backs on hand for Sunday's event were solid top to bottom, making the MVP judging difficult with Duncanville, Tex., standout Roosevelt Richmond edging out Arlington, Tex., ball carrier P'eytton Pickett, who was honored as the athlete MVP of the camp, and a couple others for the MVP hardware.
