Rocky Mount (N.C.) athlete Stephan Virgil has received written offers from Wake Forest and North Carolina, but a third offer appears to be on the way from Virginia Tech.
A 5-foot-11, 165-pound defensive back, Virgil earned all-area, all-conference, and first team all-state honors as a junior after posting 81 tackles with four interceptions, four fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles.
“My coach informed me that Virginia Tech is planning to offer me and that I should be getting the offer in the mail any day now,” explained Virgil. “Apparently there was a bit of a mix up with my tape up there, but they got everything straightened out and said they were very impressed with what they saw on film.”
Virgil is also gaining interest from North Carolina State, East Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and South Carolina. Which schools have made Stephan’s top five?
“I’d say North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, and Georgia are my leaders,” admitted Virgil. “I’ll probably wait until sometime after the season to make a decision.”
What does Stephan feel he brings to the table as a defensive back?
“My awareness on the field and my ability to read opposing quarterbacks and lineman help me out a lot,” said Virgil. “I get a good read off the snap of the football in most instances and can get myself in good position to make plays. I’d like to play a little more under control at times, it will help my tackling.”
Virgil hasn’t had a chance to see a lot of schools just yet, but plans to make his first visit to East Carolina sometime this week. What is Virgil looking for in a school?
“Education is important to me, but I’d also like the chance to play early if I can,” expressed Virgil.
Stephan plans to take all five of his official visits before deciding sometime in December.
