Tennessee and Butch Jones may have just gotten their quarterback of the future in Rivals100 prospect Jarrett Guarantano. The Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic star committed to the Volunteers on Wednesday afternoon at his school.
"Tennessee was a place I really liked since the beginning," said the 6-foot-4, 196-pound Guarantano. "Growing up, it was always a place that I loved. I have pictures of me when I was younger with a Tennessee hat on. I remember watching college football games when I was four years old and loving it when I saw Smokey on the screen."
A Volunteer coach that isn't on the staff anymore really laid the groundwork for Guarantano's strong relationship with the rest of the coaches.
"I think coach (Mike) Bajakian and I were pretty close because we had the same background," he said. "I think my relationship with coach Butch had a bigger impact because my dad has known him for a while and really does trust him. Coach Bajakian being around a lot back in the contact period really did make a difference with how I looked at the school and that type of offense."
Guarantano's friendship with prospects like five-stars Kareem Walker and Rashan Gary have the Volunteer coaches hoping they will be able to bring them into the fold as well.
"Last time I was at Tennessee, they were talking about how they want to build a pipeline to New Jersey because they know how good the football is now," Guarantano said. "I really think that, with me being there, a couple of guys will come with me. I think it's a pretty attractive place for wide receivers, so there are a couple of good ones that could go there."
Guarantano is the seventh player to commit to Tennessee's 2016 class.
