Memphis (Tenn.) Melrose star Antonio Heffner received confirmation of a big official offer this past week.
“Tennessee made me an official offer,” said the three-star prospect, ranked the nation’s No. 16 pro-style quarterback by Rivals.com. “They had talked like they were going to offer, and I think I said they had offered last time, but now it’s official. They’ve offered Ellix (Wilson), too, so that’s cool.”
Wilson is Heffner’s Melrose teammate, one of several D-I prospects on the team this season. He’s the brother of former Vol Cedric Wilson and considered a strong lean to Tennessee.
For many in-state players, an offer from the Volunteers is often followed by a commitment. But Heffner (6-3, 180, 4.5) says he’s just starting to narrow his list of schools and won’t be making a decision anytime soon.
“I’ve got five schools I really like,” he said. “They’re all pretty equal right now, but they’re Tennessee, Ole Miss, Maryland, North Carolina and LSU.
“I’ll be going to Maryland on Oct. 11 for their game against Duke. It’s not an official visit or anything. I just want to go up there and get a look at campus. I'm going to be going down to LSU at some point, too.”
Asked what the keys to his decision will be, Heffner said “I want to see their business schools, meet the head coaches, and find out where I fit into their program – see how the depth charts look at quarterback.”
As a junior, Heffner threw for 1,439 yards and 18 touchdowns.
He maintains a 2.8 GPA and is awaiting his test scores.
