Lewis Jr. has his first three official scholarship offers.
Tennessee, Maryland and East Carolina have each offered
the 5-foot-9, 185-pound Lewis, who is being scouted as a running back,
wide receiver or defensive back.
"One school will have offense in mind for me, and
another will say defense," he said. "Virginia Tech is recruiting me as a running
back. Tennessee and Maryland see me as a defensive back. East Carolina, they
throw the ball a lot, so they're thinking of me as a wide receiver.
"My favorite is running back because that's where I've
always played, but I just want to play. Whatever position you put me at, I'm
going to do my best."
Lewis rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns as a
junior at GW-Danville, but missed a significant amount of time with a nagging ankle injury.
What scouts like more than his statistics are his physical tools, which include
a 4.4 forty, 270 bench and 425 squat.
"My big strength is my speed, especially at running
back," he said. "If I get to the outside, not too many people are going to catch
me. You better not blink or I'll be gone.
"On defense, I have that speed, but I also have good
cover skills and go get the ball like it belongs to me."
Lewis' father, Kenny Sr., was a standout at Virginia Tech, so the Hokies
clearly have the upper hand in his recruitment.
"That, plus I really like the school a lot," Lewis said. "I like the people,
the coaches and the atmosphere. I'm really hoping I get an offer from them."
And if not, he's got some outstanding options.
"I'm getting a good vibe from Tennessee," he said. "They really want to see
me play for them. That's another school I've liked because they're always on TV,
playing in big games, just a winning program.
"Maryland has been recruiting me hard and they're willing to let me try
different positions, so I like that... But those are my top three schools right
now."
Lewis is also receiving heavy interest from Penn State and Virginia.
