Virginia gets first commitment for 2006

The Virginia Cavaliers got off to a fast start last recruiting year and are off to a fast start for 2006 as well. Their first commitment came this past weekend at their junior day.
"He committed there this weekend, he really liked it," said Glassboro, N.J. head coach Herb Neilio of his standout linebacker George Johnson. "George plays both ways for us, but Virginia wants him as a linebacker and defensive end. We play a 50 defense so he plays with his hand down and standing up at times."

Johnson was receiving early interest from Boston College, Iowa, Rutgers, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and others but fell in love with Virginia on his visit.
"Academics are important to him and he liked the coaches," said Neilio. "He'll have to tell you his other reasons himself, but he committed this past weekend."
Johnson, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 230 pounds, is still growing. His dad is 6-foot-7 and Johnson could still add a couple inches and plenty of weight.
"Some schools wanted him as a pure defensive end," said Neilio. "But Virginia wants their outside guys to be big and tall. He's a very good athlete so he'll do well there."
