Virginia DE breaks down recent Maryland visit

With a lone offer from Kent State at this point in time, Ashburn (Va.) Stone Bridge 2020 defensive end Mikail Kamara is a name to keep an eye on as he continues to garner interest from Power Five programs, including Maryland, which hosted the 6-foot-2, 230-pound pass rusher in College Park Feb. 18.

“It was a great trip,” Kamara told TSR. “I met the coaches, went through the locker room and watched the players lift. I like how close it was to home and I really loved the images of the new construction set to be done by 2020.”

Kamara spent most of his time at Maryland with defensive line coach Delbert Cowsette, who let him know what he likes about his game and that he is squarely on the Terps’ radar.

“I think he will be a great coach for me,” Kamara said. “He has lots of energy and really knows his stuff, especially because he was in the league. He said he really likes my size and speed off the end and he really liked the fact that this was my first year playing defensive end.”

Kamara finished his junior season with 72 tackles, 16 sacks and three forced fumbles for a Stone Bridge team that advanced to the Virginia Class 5 State Championship game.

Although Kamara left College Park without an offer, that could change in the coming months based on his conversations with the Terps coaches he interacted with.

As a school from a major conference that is relatively close to home, an offer from Maryland is one that Kamara is eager to receive.

“Getting an offer from them would mean a lot,” Kamara said. “That would be my first Power Five offer. Honestly I think I can receive an offer soon after a camp or when [Cowsette] comes to see me workout. I haven’t been a Maryland fan (growing up) but it’s just a great opportunity to be able to get my family to see me play and for me to be able to come down to see them if anything happened.”

Kamara is also receiving interest from East Carolina, James Madison, Virginia and Virginia Tech. He believes an offer from Virginia Tech could be around the corner.

Kamara paid visits to the Pirates and Hokies in February along with Maryland, and he is sure to have a busy spring and summer as his recruitment continues to blow up. He has a visit planned to Kent State March 15, and College Park is a place he intends on making it back to as soon as he can.

“I’m having another visit (to Maryland) soon,” Kamara said. “We just gotta figure out the date and I probably will attend a camp.”
