Virginia adds Carolina kicker

Virginia picked up commitment No. 15 on the year from Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Senior kicker Chris Hinkebein. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder received the offer from the Cavaliers Friday night and made his decision earlier today.
"I committed this afternoon to coach Groh," he said. "He was very excited and looks forward to seeing me this coming weekend for the game. He told me that he really likes my consistency and poise.

"In the end, Virginia was just where I wanted to be. It met all the standards I wanted and seemed like the right place. They had been my No. 1 school for a while and when they offered I was very excited. I just wanted to let it soak in before committing."
Obviously the Cavaliers have been high on Hinkebein's list, what makes them stand out?
"I really like the academics there, but I also like all the coaches," he said. "I really like Mike Groh a lot. He stood out to me because he was the first coach to ever talk to me. He's a real nice guy and I've gotten to know him well. I also like Al Groh and have talked to him a lot too. Aside from that, the location is very nice and I like the fact they have a good reputation in football and academics."
As far as playing time goes, Hinkebein isn't sure when he'll see the field in Charlottesville.
"I'm really excited to get up there," he said. "The coaches said they'll take a look at me when I get there this summer for workouts. They just want me to focus on my senior season."
