Versatility is Gillespies calling card

Ventura (Calif.) Saint Bonaventure under the leadership of Coach John Mack has turned into one of Ventura County’s premier programs. Once again Saint Bonnie is in the thick of it in 2004 and should be a major player once the playoffs roll around. One of the reasons is defensive tackle Carlton Gillespie (6-0, 250, 4.8).
“Notre Dame, Northwestern, and Cal are recruiting Carlton the hardest,” Mack said. “He loves Cal because it is close to home and loves Notre Dame because he grew up as a Fighting Irish fan. Carlton’s parents love the academic reputation of Northwestern.”

The thing that colleges love about Gillespie is his versatility. He started as a tight end as a sophomore when Saint Bonaventure won the CIF title.
Gillespie spent his junior season playing defensive tackle and as a senior season he is playing primarily defensive end.
“Carlton could play a variety of positions on the collegiate level,” Mack said. “He even play fullback. He has good hands and is a great blocker.”
Gillespie’s athletic prowess isn’t limited to the gridiron. He also stands out on the track and field where he is one of the best discus throwers his age in the nation. He made it to the state finals as a junior.
Gillespie was an all-league selection as a junior after racking up 54 tackles and four sacks.
