The 2014 class in New Jersey is very deep and one of those players that is on the rise is Joe Vitiello. The tight end from Somerville (N.J.) Immaculata has offers from Massachusetts and Temple and picked up another offer this week.
"I was with my coach at the weight room and he said the USF coach wanted me to talk to him that day," said the 6-foot-5, 255-pound Vitiello. "After lifting we called him and I was talking to the recruiting coordinator and he put me on the phone with the head coach and they said they were going to get me a scholarship. They want me to come down and see the campus because he thinks ill like it a lot.
"It's in a very nice area," he said. "My sister goes to Wayne University in Boca, my grandparents live down there and my dad has a office building down in Tampa so he's always there. I'm pretty familiar with the area. I told the coach I would probably take a visit down there in May."
Several schools that Vitiello has visited recently are very close to offering him.
"I went to Temple's junior day and I liked what they had there," he said. "The tight end coach definitely knows what he's talking about. They have new equipment in the weight room, which is pretty cool.
"I was at Penn State last weekend," Vitiello said. "I like it a lot. They like me a lot because I can play tight end of defensive end. I don't think the sanctions will make a difference for me. It's just another school, even with what happened, I don't factor that into the decision at all.
"I've been in touch with Rutgers for about a year and a half now," he said. "I was close with Coach Dinkins but now he's gone and now I've been hearing less and less from them. They talk to me every now and then and send letters but it has definitely faded since Coach Dinkins left. I'm going to go to their big man camp also.
"I went up to Boston College about a month ago," said Vitiello. "I liked it a lot and they use their tight ends very well.
"I'm going to Maryland's spring game on today," he said. "I'm really close with Maryland. I think they might be the next to offer."
With so much interest, how will Vitiello decide with school to choose?
"I'm looking for a school where I can have a good relationship with my position coach because that's who I'm going to be spending most of my time with," Vitiello said. "I want to do something in business so I want a good business school. Other than that, I want it to be a place that I could see myself playing at."
Vitiello will be participating in the Rivals Camp Series presented by Under Armour in Piscataway, New Jersey on April 27.
