USC offer surprises Mixon

Joe Mixon was about to leave the USC junior day without an offer, the impression being the Trojans were going to wait longer to offer the Oakley (Calif.) Freedom running back.
That would have been a tremendous disappointment to the four-star prospect who already has more than 30 offers especially since he came to USC with the idea an offer would be presented after talking to the coaches in recent weeks.

Minutes before he was to depart campus, though, Mixon got pulled in to a room by coach Lane Kiffin who delivered the news: USC planned to offer him right then.
"When I was leaving coach Kiffin pulled me in to the other room," Mixon said.
"He said, 'Come here really fast.' I went over there and we sat down and he was like, 'I'm glad you're here. I didn't really want to say it in front of everybody but you have a full-ride scholarship to USC.'"
Mixon has picked up many major offers - including recent ones from Miami and Florida State - and USC is another big-time one to add to the list.
What was especially exciting for Mixon was that he planned to leave campus without an offer after one wasn't given out earlier in the day.
The last-minute surprise by Kiffin was an unexpected move for Mixon, rated as the No. 82 prospect in the 2014 class by Rivals.com. One that he appreciated.
"That's a big one," Mixon said. "That's a big one to have and I'm excited for it."
The next step for the Oakley Freedom standout is to trim his extensive list. Schools from across the country have offered recently and many major programs are in the mix.
Because things are getting uncontrollable with more than 30 offers, Mixon said he wants to cut his list and focus on the schools he would highly consider.
"I'm kind of looking forward to narrowing it down pretty soon," Mixon said. "This is one that's going to make the cut."
