Updated Rivals100 highlighted by changes

The Rivals100 team signifies the top 100 players in the nation and has been ranked from No. 1 to 100 for the last four months.

The newest edition of the elite list has a few changes and a handful of players that have crept onto the team. The biggest addition, though, came with the inclusion of Maryland commitment George “Trey” Covington of Greenbelt (Md.) Eleanor Roosevelt.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Covington was bumped up to the No. 63 spot in the entire nation after Rivals100 personally evaluated him in mid October. The Maryland pledge simply has it all – great motor to the ball, ability to close and finish. He’s also one of the smartest players you’ll find on the football field.

“Trey is the most stable kid in our program,” Roosevelt coach Rick Houchens said.

“You can always count on him. He leads by example and when you need a big play, he’ll make it at the key time. He can come from the backside and get after the quarterback and he’s amazing when it comes sideline to sideline.”

Houchens is right.

Covington committed early to Maryland over offers from Colorado, Duke, Tennessee and Virginia, and is very worthy of his lofty four-star ranking and top 100 billing.

He’s more physically developed than five-star teammate Derrick Harvey at this point and would be recruited by everybody in the nation if he hadn’t picked the Terps early.

“I have no doubt in my mind if Trey hadn’t of committed early to Maryland he would have just as many offers as Derrick does,” Houchens said.

“He would have been recruited by everybody in the nation. But he felt really comfortable with his decision to commit early to Maryland and stay close to home. I know coach (Ralph) Friedgen is extremely happy to have him and he should be.”

Another big change on the list came with the departure of former five-star and top-ranked safety Randy Estes. With Estes’ off the field problems and with it uncertain that he’ll even graduate high school, the Rivals100 staff decided it would be best suited to bump him down to the No. 4 at safety.

Other notable moves:

-San Jose (Calif.) Valley Christian weakside defensive end Jeff Schweiger moved up to the No. 19 spot in the nation and to a five-star selection.

-South Carolina outside linebacker Lawrence Timmons finally got some love and moved into the top 100 at the No. 57 spot. Timmons is set to visit Maryland, Florida State, Florida and Tennessee.

-Moving up to the No. 25 spot was the hottest quarterback prospect on the West Coast, Matt Tuiasosopo of Woodinville, Wash. The four-star pick is looking hard at UCLA, Washington, Stanford, USC, Notre Dame and several others.
