Defensive back Giovanni Biggers narrowed his list of offers down to North Carolina and Rutgers but the Baltimore (Md.) Boys Latin School star announced his commitment to the Tar Heels on Wednesday evening.

IN HIS OWN WORDS...

"From the first time I stepped foot on that campus I just felt I was home," Biggers said. "Everything was in the right place. It was one of the first schools where I was able to see the campus, facilities, and everything. The people and the coaches there are amazing.

"The first coach I met was coach JP (John Papuchis)," he said. "He was the one that actually offered me. He really likes me and likes what they see on film. A lot of kids can’t cover and hit but the safeties coach and coach JP think I can do both really well. We all agree that I’ll be best at the free safety position because of my versatility.

"I was talking to coach Thigpen last night and D’Von Ellies, right by my school, is somebody they really want," said Biggers. "I’m going to get on the phone and start working on him."

RIVALS' REACTION...

This is a step in the right direction for North Carolina as they try to bounce back after a disappointing, injury depleted season and a couple of big decommitments a few months ago. Biggers brings a solid skill set to the secondary and, with his versatility and range, is similar to former Tar Heel M.J. Stewart. North Carolina should be able to count on Biggers becoming an important playmaker for them down the road.
