UNC Gets First Commitment

The North Carolina coaching staff is off to another hot start this recruiting year. Their first oral commitment for the class of 2003 is one of the top players on the east coast.
"I'm committing to North Carolina tomorrow," said Mike Mason, a 6-foot, 175-pound wide receiver from Rocky Mount (N.C.) Senior. "I'm going to call coach Bunting and give him the news."

Mason took an unofficial visit to North Carolina this past weekend and confirmed all his initial thoughts.
"I loved that place," said the speedy wideout. "I've had UNC stuff in my room forever and I always liked them. Alot of my friends go there, they have a great business school, the coaches are cool and I like their style of play."
Mason attended a practice this past Saturday in Chapel Hill and then attended junior day on Sunday. He talked things over with his family upon his return.
"They wanted me to go there too," he said. "I think they knew it would be right for me."
Mike chose North Carolina over offers from Notre Dame, Virginia, Wake Forest, East Carolina. He had interest from over 30 schools already.
Mason, who had 66 catches for 975 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, hopes to graduate early and enroll in January of 2003. Either way, the UNC staff will be smiling on Tuesday.
