The scholarship offer tally stands at four for Hawaii-based defensive tackle Fred Ulu-Perry. Colorado, Hawaii, Texas Tech and Washington State have all made things official, and there's a chance that the group will grow in size in the near future.
Ulu-Perry plays for one of Hawaii's top football programs, so this isn't exactly a diamond-in-the-rough situation. His recruitment has momentum.
"A lot of coaches just talk to me on Facebook and stuff like that," Ulu-Perry said. One of the Ole Miss coaches talks to me on there. With Oklahoma, the assistant o-line coach talks to me. He was actually my coach at the Eastbay All-American game, so I know him from there. Somebody from Kansas is always in contact with me. Kansas and Mississippi State are talking to me on social media."
Ulu-Perry is locked into exploration mode and will remain there as other offers arrive. He's not interested in naming favorites or creating separation between his offers at this point. He's listening to every coach's pitch.
"Texas Tech talks to me maybe the most right now, but there aren't any favorites," Ulu-Perry said. "All of them are still all the same really. I wouldn't mind going to all of them. They're all equal now."
Ulu-Perry will be on the mainland for the Los Angeles Nike Camp on March 9 and may tour a school or two at that time. He has no concrete plan to do so at this juncture, but is entertaining the possibility.
A junior at Honolulu's St. Louis High School, Ulu-Perry grew up a fan of the in-state program and attended plenty of Hawaii football games as a kid. So while the school is not usually a landing place for top-level talent, the three-star defensive end says the hometown team will be a player in his recruitment until the end.
"There's still a chance that I stay in Hawaii," he said. "Even though they were 1-11, there's still a chance I could stay home. There always will be that chance. I'm interested in Hawaii because I was always a fan."
