UGA, UK, UF pushing for 3-star TE Mathis

Class of 2016 Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep three-star tight end Jacob Mathis has spent the spring taking a look at several big programs and now he's expecting several to return the favor soon.
In the meantime, he's focused on a trio of schools -- Georgia, Kentucky and Florida -- that are showing him the most love.

"Georgia told me that I'm the No. 1 tight end on their board," the 6-foot-4, 212-pound prospect said. "I went up there last month to watch one of their scrimmages. It was good, they use their tight ends a lot. Coach Richt is a good guy and so is coach Schottenheimer and Coach Lilly. Those are three guys I talk to a lot up there."
While Mathis is an ideal fit in for a spread offense, he said that Georgia offers the best of both worlds in terms of a spread and a pro-style hybrid.
"Georgia sort of does as little bit of everything in terms of spread and pro-style," Mathis said. "I wouldn't be able to label their offense in one group because they do it all."
The Wildcats have also let Mathis know that he's high on their list, but he's not as far along in the process with the school.
"Kentucky is coming real hard but I haven't had a chance to visit there yet," Mathis said. "Coach Scott is awesome. He tells me that he's really talking me up to the other coaches. He just kind of wants to make it known to me that I'm a priority to them."
Because of proximity, the Gators have had plenty of opportunities to get Mathis on campus and see him in person and he said that relationship building is paying off.
"I talk to coach McIlwain, he's awesome," Mathis said. "I sat down and chatted with him the last time I was up there. He kind of also told me that the offense that they're going to be using will be a good fit for me. He likes me ball skills because they thinks they are going to sling the rock a little bit. They also have some good running backs there as well so I could be doing some blocking."
Mathis said he's not ready to name favorites or trim his list quite yet, but that could change soon.
"I think after the coaches come through this spring I can really sit down and cut my schools and focus on a top group," he said.
