Deionte Thompson, five-star safety and Alabama commitment from West Orange-Stark High School in Orange, Texas, is excited for the competition level he will face at the Under Armour All-American game on Jan. 2.
"It means a lot to be to be selected to play in the game," Thompson said. "It lets me know how hard I have been working. My hard work has paid off. I am blessed to be able to play in this game.
"It's going to be a stacked game. There are a lot of big-time recruits in the game. I am ready to compete. Most of the big-name receivers will be there. I am ready to match-up with those guys. I want to show that not only can I compete in camps, but I can do it with pads on too."
Thompson returned to Tuscaloosa on Saturday for the Tide's 25-20 win against Mississippi State.
"The trip was amazing," he said. "From start-to-finish as soon as I stepped on campus it was a great day. I talked to Coach Saban before the game. When we were pulling up to the facility, we saw Coach Saban walking from the hotel. We pulled up and rolled down the window. When he recognized me he walked up to the car and shook my hand. It made my day.
"The visit ranks up there with the top visits I've had to Tuscaloosa. The defense stepped up. They played a tremendous game. Landon Collins was great. I really think he should be up for the Heisman. He is a great player.
"Nick Perry really stepped up. He was another guy who stood out. Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson were great. They had an eye-popping game. Amari Cooper played great. Blake Sims made some tremendous plays on third down."
Thompson enjoyed the game day experience in Tuscaloosa. He said it was a live atmosphere at Bryant-Denny Stadium. He looks forward to returning for an official visit next week for the Iron Bowl against Auburn.
"I got this great feeling while I was there," Thompson said. "I know I am a couple of steps closer to playing in that stadium. It's a tremendous feeling knowing one day soon I will have one of those crimson jerseys on. I am ready for it."
