Christian Kirk is nothing of not goal-orientated. His goals aren't all unique for a football star. Playing in college is one goal. Making an NFL roster is another. He wouldn't mind winning some awards along the way, either.
He'll worry about that stuff in the future, though. On Thursday afternoon, he was busy accomplishing another milestone. Kirk official became an Under Armour All-American when he accepted his jersey in front of his family and teammates inside the community room at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro High School.
And with his acceptance speech came an electric smile.
"This has been a dream of mine forever," Kirk said. "I grew up wanting these all-star games. I actually went to them. It was, like, my No. 1 goal to play in one of them."
There hasn't been much doubt about Kirk's ability to accomplish such a goal for some time. It was clear years ago that he would be invited to at least one of the major all-star showcases. His problem was the fact that he received too many invitations. For Kirk, choosing a game was a full-fledged ordeal.
"Obviously, I committed to play at the Army game first," Kirk said. "They invited me my freshman year, but it was kind of like committing to a school too early. I didn't see the other side of things. Once Under Armour invited me, I loved the feel of their game. I knew some guys in the game last year, so I knew I wanted to play in Under Armour."
The pomp and circumstance that will surround the January game is nice. Kirk says he's also looking forward to visiting Disney World during his trip to Orlando. He respects what the invitation means, appreciates the opportunity with which he's been presented. Thing is, he's making the trip for a football game. To Kirk, this is no vacation.
The game itself is what has him most excited.
"I'm pretty excited to see how everyone fares in pads," Kirk said. "We've all played each other in t-shirts and shorts at camps. I loved the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge and The Opening. I'm excited to be back with these same guys, but in pads this time. It's going to be fun."
Kirk, who just wrapped up a visit to Auburn, remains uncommitted. His finalists consist of Arizona State, UCLA, USC, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Auburn.
