The smile is hard to hide. It is a proud moment for Malik Jefferson and his smile is big and bright.
Mesquite (Texas) Poteet's five-star linebacker is seated in front of his peers with family, friends, and mentors surrounding him. It is a special day and the smile will not go away as he is presented as an Under Armour All-American.
"It's a true blessing and an honor," Jefferson said. "You pray and hope for things like this to happen and it happens. You keep working hard and you never notice it until it comes to you and hits you. It's just a true blessing to be experiencing this honor that Under Armour is presenting me with."
The moment has been a long time in the making for Jefferson, but it was one he was able to envision early in his high school career.
"Honestly my sophomore year when everything started getting hype," Jefferson said. "Then junior year, I saw what was going on and I've always loved going up against the top and competing against the best. That's one of the big reasons I chose to play in the Under Armour game."
The "hype" began after Jefferson announced his presence with a stellar sophomore season. He saw scholarship offers begin to pour in from across the country as his highlight tape hit the desks of college coaches.
Top teams from across the country continue to fight for his attention. His first official visit is scheduled to Texas A&M for the weekend of Nov. 14, and he is trying to schedule a visit to LSU this weekend.
Baylor, Texas, UCLA, Oregon, TCU, and Oklahoma are schools commonly mentioned with Jefferson. There has been much speculation about where he will head, but he is in no hurry.
"I'm just taking it slow, and one day at a time," Jefferson said.
He plans to announce his college choice on Dec. 19 with teammate and friend Deandre McNeal.
Playing in the Under Armour All-American game and joining the likes of past defensive stars Jadeveon Clowney and Myles Garrett will cap off what has been a stellar high school career. There are many things to look forward to about the trip to Florida, but for Jefferson one thing has him smiling more than the rest.
"Having fun," Jefferson said. "Just having fun and competing at the highest level and basically getting ready to go off and play college ball."
