Christian School prospect Micah Abernathy was first selected to play in
the Under Armour All-America Game, he didn't tweet out the news to his followers
or share with his friends on Facebook. Instead, he kept the news to himself and
his family, fitting to his low-key manner.
But on Friday, the reserved Abernathy couldn't hide from the spotlight as his
Under Armour jersey presentation was held as part of GAC's homecoming
festivities, complete with the band, a standing ovation, a spotlight and even a
homecoming sketch.
"It's a family community here at GAC," Abernathy said of the turnout for his
event. "It's just a big family so I'm very happy that everyone was here to share
this with me and it's really exciting."
When he plays in January's game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Abernathy will be the first player in GAC history to make it to the Under Armour
Game.
"I'm humbled and honored to be the first person in school history to make it,"
Abernathy said. "It's an honor. You just have to go down there and represent
your team and your family and your friends and GAC."
Despite being set to play in the game as a defensive back, Abernathy plays
primarily running back for his high school team. He said he was thrilled that
Under Armour will give him the opportunity to play among the nation's best at
his likely college position.
"I feel like I have a higher ceiling at cornerback or safety than I do at
running back," he said. "My heart has always been on defense. I love running
back and I love having the ball in my hands but my heart is on defense."
Abernathy's older brother Ralph David Abernathy IV is a
college player at Cincinnati, and Micah said he has worked hard to
follow his brothers path to success.
"My sophomore and junior year I definitely played with a chip on my shoulder,"
he said. "My brother probably had a bigger one than me because he was always
doubted because of his size but I felt like I had to prove myself just like he
did."
With Atlanta just about seven hours away from the Tampa-St. Petersburg area,
Abernathy said he anticipates similar support at the Jan. 2 Under Armour game
than that he received on Friday.
"I have a really big support system so I will expect a lot of my family and
friends and the community to be there," he said. "This is a big honor and I'm
glad I have so many supporters to share it with."
Abernathy will be on campus this weekend at Tennessee for an official
visit, after visiting Georgia last weekend and Oregon for the
Michigan State game last month. The Vols and Bulldogs are believed to
be the favorites for his services.
