Arden Key received a big honor during a ceremony at his school on
Friday afternoon when the talented defensive end was presented with his Under
Armour All-America Game jersey, making his invitation to the prestigious
all-star game official.
The Peach State product, ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 10 weakside defensive
end prospect in the country, did not take the accomplishment lightly.
"It means everything. Every kid dreams of this opportunity and I'm blessed to
have this opportunity before me," he said.
Every January, a group of the nation's top college football prospects make the
trip to St. Petersburg, Fla. to play in the game. As for what he hopes to
accomplish, the 6-foot-5, 228-pounder is looking forward to meeting fellow
players and the excellent coaches that participate.
"I just want to get out, have fun and build a relationship with other top-ranked
football players like myself," Key said. "I want to build a relationship with
the ex-head coaches, the other coaches, and all that to show and show them why
I'm ranked where I am."
Key's recruiting process has been an interesting one. After making a commitment
last summer to South Carolina and backing off the pledge a few months
later, he once again gave his word to the Gamecocks this summer. That latest
verbal still stands, although he's still keeping his ears open to others.
"Yeah I'm committed. I'm still hearing what other schools have to offer.
LSU, Alabama, Georgia, that's about it right now," he
said of the other programs that are continuing to correspond with him.
Key will travel to Columbia once again to see the Gamecocks in action against
Georgia on Saturday.
"They're telling me that I can come in and start, that they need pass rushers,"
he said of Lorenzo Ward and his defensive staff. "We're just building a
relationship from there."
The four-star lineman classified his commitment strength as "75 or 80 percent"
and mentioned that LSU, South Carolina and Texas Tech are possibilities
for official visits this fall or in January.
The Under Armour All-America Game will be held at Tropicana Field in St.
Petersburg on Jan. 2, 2015.
