Two up, two down for Mackey

Two trips down. Three to go. That’s how blue chip wide receiver Blake Mackey of Bakersfield, Calif., sees it.
While recruiting is starting to take up a lot of time for Mackey, there’s still one other thing on his mind. His last regular season game is Friday night and the playoffs are on the horizon.

Bakersfield is 8-0 this campaign and ranked No. 5 in the state.
Mackey has caught 37 passes for eight touchdowns and more than 600 yards as a senior. So the 6-foot-3, 185-pound speedster is helping the team about as much as he can.
He just returned from his official visit to Washington State, watching the Cougars defeat UCLA.
“I liked the game,” Mackey said. “But I really thought the best part were the other players. They were cool.”
While the Wazzu football players may be “cool”, Mackey says he’s still going to try to take all five official visits before making a college decision.
He has three more visits scheduled: one to Washington on Nov. 30, one to Arizona State on Dec. 7 and one to Colorado on Dec. 14. He visited BYU in October.
The Washington visit that is scheduled is tenuous.
“If we’re still in the playoffs, I don’t think I’ll visit Washington then,” he explained. “Their coaches told me that they’d like me to really spend a whole weekend there. You know, they don’t want me to just come in on a Saturday morning and leave on Sunday.”
So if Bakersfield is still in the playoffs at that time, which appears likely, then expect Mackey to move his UW visit to January. That’s something Mackey won’t really like doing.
“I was hoping to have this all done by the end of December. I’m not really sure where I’m going. The visits have been great. It’s all kind of made me unsure.”
At the beginning of the recruiting battle, Mackey had said he favored Arizona State because of the Sun Devils’ proximity to Bakersfield and the fact that Mackey spent much of his early childhood in the Phoenix area.
