Two state connection for Rian Davis aids explosion in offers

2019 defensive maven Rian Davis isn’t quite on the level of an international man of mystery, but domestically, he’s close.

Davis is currently in Florida with his mother, but played his last two high school football seasons at Houston-area Clear Lake High School. When he was in Texas, he had been staying with an uncle, but he said that right now, it’s yet to be determined if he will return for his senior season or stay in the Sunshine State.

The uncertainty about where he’ll be playing next fall hasn’t slowed the momentum he’s built on the recruiting train in recent days. Davis has picked up six offers since January 16, and said that even he hasn’t expected getting the types of phone calls he’s received in over the last week.

“It was exciting,” he said. “It’s been crazy - a coach from clear lake will call and say, ‘such and such came by to offer you today’ and then the next day I’ll get a call from a coach here and he’ll say the same thing, and it’s just crazy.”

Even if he ends up staying in Florida, some of the newer schools involved with his recruitment are still going to have to contend with the likes of Oklahoma and Texas. Davis was in Norman this past weekend for the Sooners junior day event, and he plans on being in Austin on February 17 when Texas hosts one of its own.

IN HIS WORDS

On Oklahoma

“[Oklahoma] sends me mail all the time,” he said. “The first time I made contact with them was at a camp. After I ran my 40 the linebacker coach came over and was talking to me and then after one-on-ones he gave me his card. They’ve been constantly sending me mail and invited me to their junior day.”

“I am very impressed with the program,” he said. “I was watching (Ogbonnia Okoronkwo) and he’s just a beast. If they can develop me into something like that - or more - then that would be a great program to play college football at.”

On Texas

“I’ve been talking to Oscar Giles for a while,” he said. “I went to one of their camps and did pretty good at it, then he followed me on Twitter and all that. They invited me to all of their home games … I made the one against Oklahoma State, and that was a little awkward because Oklahoma State had offered me at that point, but I was at a UT game on the UT side, so I didn’t really root for anybody.”

“(Giles) is one of the guys I get along with, definitely,” he said. “They showed me around a little bit when I was at the game, showed me what the lockers looked like. They showed me some things about the education - what type of majors I could do, stuff like that.”

On Miami

“That was crazy because two other players on my team had got offers from them and then my coach called me that night and told me that Miami had offered me too,” he said. “I was just like, so excited … I definitely want to go visit, they’re one of my top schools.”

“How that defense is - the turnover chain and all - you can tell that the defense is having fun out there,” he said. “They’ve been exciting to watch.”

RIVALS REACTION

Despite being between locations, Davis seems to have an enough opportunity to make it out and get a closer look at the schools that he’s been interested in thus far. He also benefits from having the endorsement of two high school staffs singing his praises to visiting coaches as they make their rounds this spring. Davis will be an interesting watch through the offseason and should continue to garner plenty of interest with his versatility as an edge-rusher or linebacker.
