Hampton (Va.) Phoebus cornerback Phillip Brown is the top player in the state of Virginia heading into the 2002 season. While both Virginia and Virginia Tech want to keep him in state, many others are also calling.
"Right now my favorites are Virginia Tech, Clemson, NC State, Maryland, and Virginia," said the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder who is also a standout wide receiver and punt returner. "I'm looking for a good location and how close it is to home. I'm also interested in the coaches, graduation rate and how I interact with the players and students. I want a team effort, players that are concerned about the team and not just individual efforts. That will be key."
Although Brown likes all five of his favorites, two teams stand out right now.
"I like Virginia Tech and NC State the best right now," he said. "I've been to both of them as well as UVA and Clemson, but I didn't really have a chance to check things out too much. I want to get to see all five of my favorites on official visits."
And when will those happen?
"Not until after my senior season is over," he said. "I want another state championship first and then I'll work on recruiting."
