Houston (Texas) Kinkaid 2015 offensive tackle Tyler Higby started the 2012 season at tackle for the Falcons and then hit the camp circuit over the summer months.
It did not take long for the 6-foot-4, 285-pound lineman to see his hard work pay off. The Texas State Bobcats were the first to extend an offer in mid-July, and then LSU offered after he put together a solid performance at the Tiger's three-day camp in Baton Rouge.
After his performance at Baton Rouge he made his way to Baylor for camp.
"The coaches at Baylor are really enthusiastic," Higby said. "They were really good with teaching technique. I thought that was really good. I liked the o-line coach there."
Next up was a Houston camp.
"The Houston camp was at a high school so we didn't go to the campus," Higby said. "I didn't like that one as much, but I did get a lot of good coaching from it and the coaches were real enthusiastic."
Finally, he capped off the summer with an unofficial visit to TCU, where there were several aspects of the trip to Fort Worth which caught his attention.
"Just all the facilities they have," Higby said. "I knew they weren't going to have bad stuff, but the thing I remember most was in the training room they have a thing for players to sit in for like two minutes, a really, really cold machine. They said it was like going into an ice bath. When you get there it takes the soreness out. It was really cool.
"But just everything about it. I really liked all the coaches and the facilities and the campus was really nice."
Higby also received some positive feedback from the Horned Frog coaching staff.
"The o-line coach (Eddie Williamson said they're going to probably offer me when they see me in person," Higby said.
After receiving his LSU offer, the Tigers vaulted to the top spot on his list. After a few more visits, there appears to be some company.
"Right now I still think it's LSU and TCU," Higby said. "It might change. I don't know. That's what it is right now."
As the 2013 season approaches, he does not have any unofficial visits set in stone, but he does have a few he would like to take.
"I know I'm going to try to go to the LSU/TCU game at Cowboys Stadium the first game of the year, and maybe another LSU game and I think another TCU game too," Higby said. "Those were the two where the coaches said they wanted me to come to their games."
