Top Virginia LB lists seven favs

Junior To Watch: Jerod Mayo
School: Hampton (Va.) Kecoughtan
Position: Linebacker
Size and speed: Mayo is 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds. He has been timed at 4.68 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
Honors: First team all-district, first team all-region, team’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Statistics: Mayo had 68 tackles as a junior with 22 for a loss. He had three sacks, had four interceptions and recovered five fumbles.
Favorite schools: Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State, Tennessee, Ohio State, Syracuse, Boston College.
Skinny: Mayo is one of the top players in the state of Virginia for 2004 and is hearing from all of his favorites.
"I've received mail from a lot of schools already," said Mayo. "I'm going to camp at UVA and Virginia Tech and maybe one other place."
Mayo grew up following one of the two in-state powers.
"I've followed the Hokies forever," he said. "I always liked their defense."
While Mayo plays linebacker and running back in high school, most schools want him for defense.
"I'm being recruited as a linebacker for the most part," he said. "Mostly as an outside linebacker."
