Position: Offensive Lineman
Size and speed: Jones is 6-foot-5, 325 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 5.2 seconds. He bench-presses 325 pounds and squats 450.
Statistics: As a junior, graded out at 85 percent in blocking assignments. Anchored a line that produced 3,031 yards rushing en route to a Class A state championship.
Honors: Was selected first-team all-state by the Louisville Courier-Journal and was also first-team All-Western Kentucky Conference.
Favorite Schools: Kentucky, Louisville, Illinois, Auburn, Georgia
Skinny: The Bluegrass State is not typically a hotbed for offensive lineman, but schools from across the nation figure to be paying attention to Mayfield in the months to come. That’s home to the player widely regarded as the commonwealth’s top lineman, Micah Jones.
“The thing every coach sees immediately is the great size. Micah’s just a huge kid at 6-foot-5 and 325 pounds,” said Mayfield coach Joe Morris. “But then they watch him move, and that’s when they really get excited about him. He's an athlete. He moves around like a guy who’s 225 pounds. That's a neat combination to see in a high school kid.
"He’s got nice feet and is real quick off the ball. We use him a lot to pull in our offense.
“I’ve been in coaching for about the last 20 years, and he’s the most talented high school lineman I’ve ever seen. He's got unlimited potential.”
Jones has already drawn attention from Kentucky, Louisville, Auburn, Georgia, Illinois, Miami and Michigan State, among others.
“I’m not sure if he’s at the point where he’s talking about favorites, but I know he really liked UK when he went there to their junior day,” Morris said. “He’s impressed by (recruiting coordinator) Joker Phillips and their new coaching staff.
“I kind of expect him to just soak things up and enjoy the process. There’s going to be a lot more schools talking to him in the months to come.”
Jones camped at Louisville last summer. He's not decided where he'll visit this spring or summer.
