Top 2021 LB Kendrick Blackshire talks Aggies, Cowboys & Sooners

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. – The linebacker crop in Texas over the last few classes has been begging for a superstar and the player that seems the most likely to fill that role looks like 2021 Mesquite Horn prospect Kendrick Blackshire.

Already a decidedly beefy defender, some have predicted he’ll outgrow his familiar inside backer role for a future with his hand in the dirt but he was one of the top defenders on a Mesquite-Horn team that made a deep run in the Texas State 7v7 Championships last weekend. This past spring, he visited Oklahoma State with Kamryn Farrar and said that he caught a good vibe from the staff – as well as their plans for him – which don’t involve him learning a new position.

“They see me coming in at middle linebacker for them,” he said. “All day.”

While out at the state 7v7 tournament, Blackshire posted a video of him decked out in the traditional Aggies white road uniform but that was just a re-post of a clip from a previous visit. He did say that he is working on organizing his next unofficial to A&M soon but he’s also planning on making stops at LSU and Oklahoma by the end of this month.

IN HIS WORDS

On Oklahoma

“I need to get down there,” he said. “I’ll be out there for the barbecue later this summer and that will be the first time that I’ve been out there. I’m just looking to feel the love out there and that’s pretty much it.”

“The guys that I’ve talked to that are already out there tell me that it’s great out there,” he said. “They don’t have too much trouble or any of that stuff going on out there.”

More on his Oklahoma State visit

“That visit was great,” he said. “I had a good time down there, they’re very chill out there … The coaching staff really made an impression. They’re very chill, they communicate very well, they laugh with the players and they’re a good bunch.”

On Texas A&M

“We’ve been talking; I call them,” he said. “We’ve just been planning on getting some kind of visit set up for the future … Coach Mo [Maurice Linguist], I talk to him on the daily. We have a very good relationship and he’s come to my school whenever he could to come see me and I love that.”

“That defense is going to be nasty,” he said. “With guys like Leon (O’Neal), they’re going to be tough. I talk to him a lot and he’s been telling me that it’s really great out there – that it’s the best school in Texas – and I believe him. Jimbo (Fisher) is going to turn that program around.”
