LOS ANGELES - Bryson Washington has moved from Houston to Southern California but he’s not certain how much it’s going to change his recruitment.

It's just too early to say.

The 2020 standout defensive back who is now at powerhouse Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei said he’s excited to experience football in California and he was one of the top prospects this past weekend at the Premium Showcase.

“It will be kind of better,” Washington said. “Over there, back home, we didn’t have competition like that in my league. Out here it’s a whole other level. California boys are kind of fast so it will be a good experience for me.”

So far, Washington has landed offers from Alabama, Baylor, Florida State, LSU, Louisville, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oregon and Tennessee.

With his move to California, he’s hoping more Pac-12 teams start getting interested. He’s also serious about being noticed by Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

“USC is going to be one of my opportunities to get a scholarship from them,” Washington said. “Overall, it’s going to be good because I have a lot of help when it comes to my recruitment right now.

“I’m a Texas boy so I like the Longhorns and A&M. I like UCLA, too. I have to work hard to get them.”

Getting to see what Texas coach Tom Herman has accomplished so far - especially in recruiting - has not gone unnoticed by the 2020 defensive back.

“He’s doing a pretty good job over there,” Washington said. “He’s getting some big-time athletes especially on defense. He’s getting some big guys like Anthony (Cook) and all of them so he’s doing good.”

Whether Washington plans to stay in California for college or if he’s looking to head back to Texas, the new Mater Dei defensive back said he hasn’t decided anything yet.

“It’s too early to know,” he said.
